URGENT ACTION: Students (including a Toronto activist) arrested in El Salvador

27 students (including an activist from Toronto) who were protesting the 1 year anniversary of the CAFTA free trade agreement were arrested early yesterday morning in San Salvador. The students were carrying out a peaceful protest and had not damaged any property, yet have been detained by police for more than 24 hours. 2 underage minors are among the 27 students being detained. According to the Human Rights Ombudsperson's Office (PDDH), the detention was arbitrary and illegal.The students are are urging the international community to demand the following:

* Immediate release of the 27 individuals and dropping of all charges against them;
* Respect for civil rights protected under the constitution, such as the right to free expression and the right to associate;
* End the anti-terrorism law in El Salvador.
