On the eve of International Women's Day, we are saddened by the death yesterday of Rufina Amaya, the only survivor of the 1981 El Mozote massacre in El Salvador carried out by the Salvadorean Armed Forces.
Ms. Amaya showed great courage and determinantion in denouncing the massacre, in helping investigators find the remains of those killed, and in demanding that those responsible be brought to justice, even as successive right-wing ARENA governmnents have consistently supported impunity in this and other war crimes during the Salvadorean civil war.
We express our sincere condolences to Ms. Amaya's family and pledge to continue supporting the struggle to defend human rights and social justice in El Salvador.
