TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY:
(We ask our supporters to widely diffuse the news and official notices that we have published here on the recent events that have burdened with grief the Salvadoran people, and for whom we hold directly responsible the illegitimate President Elias Antonio Saca and his corrupt government. We are still on the march to freedom of our peoples, and we are not going to abandon them at any moment. )
The FMLN Secretariat of International Relations denounces before all international organisations, countries, movements, political parties and the international community, that:
At approximately 8:00 in the morning of the present day, students of public secondary institutes and the University of El Salvador UES initiated peaceful marches within their legitimate rights to protest against the unpopular measures recently imposed by the present government, protests directed at President Elías Antonio Saca, of the Governing ARENA Party; among the measures protested: the fare increase in the public transport service, the 14% increase in the electricity tarrifs, the costs of water and basic foodstuffs; as well as demanding half price fares for the student sector and elderly adults.
But the National Police Civil, PNC, by means of their elite unit for the maintenance of order, UMO, detained 2 secondary students - minors of fifteen years - without any justification with the use of violence. When the other students saw that their companions were attacked, they began to respond to the attack with stones.
The National Civil Police, gained through the Peace accords, opened fire in a repressive manner against the multitude of students with innumerable bursts of bullets, grenades and pepper gas, (like their other repressive actions recently against the social movements and demonstrations from popular organisations).
As soon as the agents were pelted with stones in response, an exchange of fire could be heard, nevertheless without being able to localise its origin. The UMO agents were supported by armed members of the PNC, while during the crossfire first aiders took care of the wounded.
When the students tried to protect themselves within the University Campus, they were shot at from a helicopter that flew over the zone and including and from the roof of the Bloom Hospital, where snipers aimed shots at the young demonstrators. According to trustworthy sources the snipers had been in place on the roof since the previous night, their result was the death of three students and two members of the UMO, and 20 students and police injured.
Also information exists that within University of El Salvador there were police dressed as civilians, who attacked the journalists and photographers who captured their images, including threatening arrest and seizure of their work equipment.
In the same manner the Secretariat of Communications of the UES informed that several students and teachers were wounded in the interior of the Alma Mater. One of them, identified as Herbert Rivas, Director of the Multidisciplinary Faculty was wounded by shots fired from a helicopter, according to their denouncement, and he affirmed that they feared chaos would originate within the university if the UMO were to enter; recalling the military interventions of the recently finalized armed conflict was one of the detonators, along with the economic and social measures being applied - along with as previously mentioned, memories of the War lived in El Salvador.
In light of these facts of violence and repression, the Secretariat of International Relations (Secretariat de Relaciones Internacional - SRI) FMLN laments the deaths of the Salvadoran citizens, who in the end do not have any culpability around the increase in the fares and the other measures implemented by the government.
THE SRI FMLN also repudiates the declarations made by President of El Salvador Elías Antonio Saca, who without foundation blames our Party for the bloodshed on this occasion, violating with these declarations the minimum conditions of democratic participation reached with the Peace accords of 1992, and attacking without any proof a political institute supported directly by more than half of the Salvadoran population; and that its fight has been and is Peace with Social Justice and with a method of frank dialogue as a means of understanding.
These unfounded accusations, do not do more than to ratify the fact that the present government does not accept the feedback of public opinion about the present crisis that is lived in El Salvador, resulting from structural causes of the neoliberal economic model implemented by the President's party ARENA in more than one decade 'ruling' our country; that is the hunger, the poverty and the injustice which gives rise to these demonstrations on the part of the civil society, and that being repressed by the government as they have done on this opportunity, triggers mourning and pain for many families.
Therefore, we ask for international public opinion to repudiate these repressive acts and to support with the Salvadoran people.
