PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE FMLN COMMITTEES IN AUSTRALIA ABOUT THE ELECTORAL FRAUD IN EL SALVADOR

We respectfully address the people of El Salvador, the political and social organisations, the electoral authorities and government of El Salvador and other people and governments of the world.

It is with firmness and conviction that we denounce the electoral fraud perpetrated by the party Arena in the elections of January 2009 in El Salvador, with the complicity of the Electoral Supreme Tribunal (TSE). A few days before and during the elections, several busloads of Honduran, Nicaraguan and Guatemalan people were detected, entering the country with the intention of fraudulently participating in the elections of Mayors and Deputies of El Salvador. Instances of foreigners voting were verified in Arcatao, San Salvador, San Isidro, San Miguel, New Edén of San Juan, Guacotecti and other municipalities. This has been verified by delegations of international observers and some of the mass media of El Salvador

The Electoral Supreme Tribunal has not followed the instructions of the Verifying Mission of the Elections in El Salvador of the Organization of American States. This is especially concerning providing the electoral register to the parties contending the election for verification of the justness and transparency of the process.

The elections occurred with instances of bullyingon the part of the Arena election attendants and members against the opposition and voting public, to the degree that some members of the public did not manage to exert their right to vote. Also, some of the voting stations were opened after two hours of delay, generating frustration in the voting public.

Fraud constitutes a precedent that is very destructive of the electoral process. The TSE has the constitutional obligation to provide an electoral process characterized by justice and transparency; in this case, these shine by their absence. Luckily, the majority of people voted and resisted the fraud, and the FMLN party clearly gained the elections.

We demand that Arena and the TSE guarantee just and transparent elections on the 15 of March. We demand that the TSE provides the electoral register to all the parties contesting the election and that it does not abuse its authority in its treatment of the opposition parties. El Salvador has already had enough frauds and deceits and the people cannot be expected to continue bearing the arrogance and machinations of Arena.

The Arena government has discriminated against the Salvadorans living overseas, denying us our right to vote. Nevertheless, they have given free identification cards(DUIs) to people of other nationalities, pay to them to vote, give them free accommodation and transport them on the day of voting. That injustice cannot continue!

We congratulate the people of El Salvador, the majority of whom in spite of all the adversities, voted in the recent elections. They remember that it is the people who need to remove the Arena party from power and that this is obtained by voting on the 15 of March for Mauricio Funes Cartagena and Salvador Sanchez Cerén, and defending their right to choose freely.

We congratulate the FMLN and our Mayors and Delegates for the political triumph in the recent elections. Congratulations especially to Mauricio and Salvador for leading a campaign that was constructive, responsible and a campaign of respect. We reaffirm our total support for our party and our candidates Mauricio Funes and Salvador Sanchez in their persistence to democratise the country.

We are grateful to the international observers for their work verifying the recent elections.

Hope is Born! Change is Coming!
